Body Mass Index (BMI) is a formula which is used in calculating obesity.

Being overweight can cause several health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems. And being underweight can increase the risk of osteoporosis and anemia.

BMI does not directly calculate the body fat and does not take into consideration age, sex, ethnicity or muscle mass in adults.

However, it uses standard weight status categories that can help doctors identify potential problems in individuals.

When calculating BMI, the person’s weight is divided by his height square and obesity status is revealed.

The criterias set by the World Health Organization are taken into consideration to be able to understand if person has obesity. These criterias are:

    • 18.5 and under: Underweight
    • 18.5 to 24.9: Normal weight
    • 25 to 29.9: Overweight
    • 30 to 34.9: 1st degree obesity
    • 35 to 39.9: 2nd degree obesity
    • 40 and above: 3rd degree obesity (Morbid obese)

You can consider the option of weight loss without surgery, if your Body Mass Index is below 40.
